Massimo Vignelli is an award-winning American graphic designer based in New York. At the height of the 'legibility wars' of the 1990s, Vignelli, having delivered a rather public tirade against Emigré's founders Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko, reacted conservatively against the experimentalism of postmodern American type design, and commissioned ITC's Tom Carnase to redraw Bodoni in four weights with accompanying italics. According to the type designer Dave Farey (writing in x-height magazine for FontHaus), this Bodoni is 'a nice enough reconstructed version along the lines of the ATF (Bodoni) style, although lighter and with a more generous x-height... but it lacks subtlety or ingenuity compared to the 18th century original.' | | |
